There are some classifications of mesothelioma's types:
This kind of mesothelioma affects the chest cavity and can sometimes touch the lung. It is now obvious that this kind of mesothelioma can cause metastases in any organ, even in the brain.
This mesothelioma spreads within the abdominal cavity, infiltrating the liver, the bowel or spleen. In this case, as well as with pleural mesothelioma, the most common complaint is pain. Moreover, the fluid gathering within the abdominal cavity (ascites) causes enlargement of the abdomen. The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are: nausea, vomiting, feet swelling, fever and difficulty in bowels moving.
Generally the survival time of such patients is much lower than the ones with pleural mesothelioma and it makes up approximately 10 months since the symptoms have shown up.
Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is the variation resembling pleural mesothelioma, except the fact that it spreads in the abdomen. The expansion of the tumor generally leads to bowel obstruction and/or distention because of the pressure it creates. Normal breathing may be disturbed in case the tumor spreads upper in the abdominal. This kind of mesothelioma takes approximately one fifth of all mesothelioma cases.
This is the most rare kind of mesothelioma an it affects the pericardium (heart lining). In case of pericardial mesothelioma, cancerous cells multiply within the tissue that surrounds the heart. The symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma are: breathing problems (also known as dyspnea), coughing, chest pain and an irregular heart beat.
This mesothelioma hasn't got cancerous nature and the most common cure is removal with surgery. Cycstic mesothelioma of the peritoneum is a rare form of mesothelioma. The prognosis of this form is promising. Young women are the most expected victims of this disease. This illness is quite difficult to diagnose, as far as it requires immunohistochemical studies along with extensive electron miscroscopy.
This disease is a very aggressive form of mesothelioma and it has a cancerous nature. 4-24 months is the expected survival time for malignant mesothelioma patients as far as it aggravates fast and gives small chances for treatment.
3. Cellular types
From 50% to 70% mesothelioma patients are ill with this type, though it has the promising prognosis growing slowly and responding to the treatment.
Sarcoma type has the worst prognosis but happens in 7% to 20% of mesothelioma cases.
In this case epithelial and sarcomatous types exist together, and this kind is found in 20% - 35% of mesothelioma cases. The intermediate prognosis is given for this kind of mesothelioma.
